We are all about family and spending a lot of time with our children and grandchildren. When I do have some leisure time, I enjoy attending lectures, volunteering, sewing, and gardening. Summary of your bio over past 50 years: | After graduation I worked at Webster’s Menswear haberdashery before matriculating at the University of Virginia. I majored in Economics and was pre-med. I tried out for a play my first year at U. Va. It was “A Hat Full of Rain”. I received a call back audition but, due to an administrative error, was told that I did not. That was the end of my drama career. I served as president of AEPi fraternity during my third year, and resident advisor back in my first-year dorm my fourth year. Many of my high school friends came to visit me and enjoy the party weekends at U.Va. ~ After college I attended the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore for two years. I helped dissect a cadaver. We named it Abra. My interest waned and I washed out during my second year. ~ Next, I landed a job in Columbus Ohio managing a plasmapheresis facility. This job helped motivate me to advance my education. I completed the prerequisite accounting classes at Ohio State University and applied to Master of Health Administration programs. ~ I attended Duke for my MHA. It was great to float on the quarry into early October, and ride my Motobecane ten speed bike through the Duke forest. As an organizer of our guest speaker program, I met the CEO of (what was to become) MedStar Health, providing a key initial job lead. ~ My career at MedStar spanned thirty-two years, moving from systems analyst jobs to manager and director level positions. The first 18 years, I built up the Financial Systems group for Washington Hospital Center. We developed custom solutions on network level databases, while supporting requirements specification and testing for enterprise mainframe applications. Next, I landed a job with two MedStar physician geniuses who built a health data solution so revolutionary that there is a chapter about it (Azyxxi) in the first Freakonomics book. When Microsoft acquired the Azyxxi program, and most of the team accepted jobs at Microsoft, I decided to stay at MedStar and became part of the MedStar Institute for Innovation. I got to assist patient care and the sepsis alerting system my team created likely helped save lives. ~ In 2019 I moved to Nashville, TN (a family hub) for a job creating Business Intelligence solutions with a nationwide home health agency. I enjoyed working as an individual contributor and mounting a steep learning curve while having zero management responsibilities. I was in the office for almost exactly a year before Covid hit, then worked the next four years remotely, retiring in December 2023. ~ I was married from 1992 through 2016, and helped raise an amazing daughter. I learned how to wash her hair without pulling (start at the ends), got laughs trying to convince her that string beans were green French fries, and elicited tears enforcing our “Math Summer Fun Book” review schedules. I fostered a love of the outdoors, partially by remembering to pocket some hard candies for hikes in the woods. One message I reinforced was to “Think with your brain.” Shelby is now a scientist doing cancer research, self-actualized, and one of the nicest people I have ever known. I am very happy for her. ~ I’ve pursued interests in sailing, backpacking, and a bit of skiing and scuba over the years. I’ve raced sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay and served as competent crew on week-long yacht sails in Europe. I’ve backpacked all over the US, including two five-night backpacks into the Grand Canyon. My favorite backpack was in the Escalante national monument, where we hiked in and out of the river for a few days. Ask me to tell the story of how I (claim to have) saved my companions’ lives during that adventure. One time, I collected two varieties of fresh seaweed near a small island in the Straight of San Juan de Fuca, dried it in the sun on a plate in the sailboat cockpit, then added it to miso soup backpacking in the White Mountains the following week. # |
